Apologetics. What does the term apologetics mean? Apologetics is the defense of the Christian faith and Jesus Christ. While most may view this concept as a professional thing that only adults can participate in by reciting elaborate speeches and heated debates, we don’t realize the practicality it holds in a day to day life for any and every Christian, especially younger Christians. The world today not only rejects Christianity, but mocks it. It compares it to a myth and belittles everything in the Bible. Our response? To first love them, of course, as 1 John 4:7 states, “let us love one another, for love comes from God. Everyone who loves has been born of God and knows God.”
Out of our love for Jesus and in response to the attack of the mockers, we should defend Jesus and our belief. 1 Peter 3:15 reports, “but sanctify Christ as Lord in your hearts, always being ready to make a defense to everyone who asks you to give an account for the hope that is in you, yet with gentleness and reverence.” Key phrases: BEING READY TO MAKE A DEFENSE, with gentleness and reverence, meaning we were commanded in the Bible to be able to defend our faith.
Not only is safeguarding our faith our duty as Christians, but it also strengthens our faith. The more you study apologetics, the more proof you’d discover for the Bible and everything in it, therefore pushing you even closer to God. Many atheists have reformed to Christianity through unknowingly studying apologetics, and decided that the evidence for Christianity was too great. Two well known biblical scholars, C. S. Lewis and Josh Mcdowell, were both once atheist but converted after the overwhelming evidence pointing towards Jesus.
Suppose you now want to look into apologetics. Where should you start? What topics to study? A few of the most popular topics are as follows: disproving evolution, proving Jesus Christ’s and God’s existence, disproving the four false theories about the resurrection, science and the Bible, reality of Heaven and Hell, morals, and Christianity vs other religions. There are many websites and books that can be accessed, multiple amazing preachers out there. I have listed a few below, but I strongly encourage you to do your own research.
As William Craig professed, “It is no longer enough to teach our children Bible stories. They need apologetics.”
Then I heard the voice of the Lord saying, “Whom shall I send? And who will go for us?” And I said, “Here am I. Send me!”
He said, “Go and tell this people: “ ‘Be ever hearing, but never understanding; be ever seeing, but never perceiving.’
